According to the latest numbers reported by AHDB, total GB pig feed production in the first quarter of 2020 rose by 6%, or 28,100 tonnes, year-on-year to 498,800 tonnes. The rise in pig feed production mirrors the rise in pig meat production for the year so far.
Pig feed production in January rose by 11% on the year. In February it remained almost level at -0.5% before rising again by 7% in March.
Finishing feed rose in production by 5%, or 11,400 tonnes, to 245,100 tonnes on the year. Breeding feed production rose by 7% (7,400 tonnes) year-on-year to 114,900 tonnes, and growing feed rose by 1% (1,200 tonnes) to 92,000 tonnes for the quarter.
Hannah Clarke, livestock analyst at AHDB commented: “We forecast that pig meat production would continue to increase moving through 2020, linked to anticipated expansion in the sow herd. The rise in pig feed production, particularly breeding and finishing, supports this. So far in 2020, UK pig meat production has been above 2019 levels, with Q1 production up 6% year-on-year.”
