David Black & Son, the diversified Suffolk farming business based in Bacton, has expanded into premium rare-breed meat production with the addition of Huntsham Heritage Meats.
The move marks a significant step in the company’s long-term diversification strategy, linking its established arable and pig farming operations with a heritage livestock brand supplying high-quality meat to chefs and households across the UK.
Blacks of Bacton has farmed in Suffolk since 1898 and today operates a modern rural business combining arable production, pig farming, environmental stewardship, commercial property and operator training through Aurelia.
Managing director Stephen Urwin said this strengthens the company’s position in high-value food production.
“This is a natural step for our business,” Mr Unwin said. “We have a long history of producing food from the land and this acquisition allows us to connect that farming heritage with premium meat markets.
“Huntsham has built an outstanding reputation for rare-breed livestock and we look forward to building on that.”
Huntsham Heritage Meats was founded by Richard and Rosamund Vaughan and has become well known for producing Middle White pork, Longhorn beef and Ryeland lamb. The business supplies a range of customers including Michelin-starred restaurants as well as private households seeking high-quality traditional breed meat.
The purchase follows the Vaughan family’s decision to retire after nearly three decades building the business.
Mr Vaughan said: “After many years developing Huntsham Heritage Meats we wanted to ensure the future of the livestock and the brand. Blacks share our commitment to farming and animal welfare and we are pleased to see the business continue under experienced farming stewardship.”
The purchase reflects growing demand for high-quality, traceable British meat and represents the latest stage in Blacks’ strategy to develop a resilient and diversified rural enterprise.
