Global pig genetics business DanBred has moved into pig production in Indonesia, as the country looks to rebuild production following years of coping with African swine fever.
In early July, 546 purebred DanBred pigs, including its Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc lines, arrived in Manado, Indonesia, to form the basis for PT SOW as a certified DanBred multiplication, with semen supply completing the breeding programme. This marked the first import of live pigs into Indonesia in more than 30 years.
DanBred said PT SOW is introducing a modern production approach focusing on biosecurity, animal welfare, and operational efficiency, combined with access to its internationally recognised genetics.
The ambition is not only to improve productivity, but also to contribute to a more stable and secure pig production – supporting farmers in rebuilding herds while strengthening long-term resilience across the sector.

Entering the Indonesian market allows us to support local producers with world-class genetics and, just as importantly, share knowledge that can help build a stronger and more sustainable pig production for the future,” said DanBred’s Henrik Nielsen.
The milestone was marked with a launch event attended by DanBred officials and the Vice Governor of North Sulawesi and the Speech Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to the Republic of Indonesia. It highlighted the ‘shared commitment to strengthening collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the future development of pig production in Indonesia’.
Robustness
DanBred has also announced that its latest benchmark show its genetics continue to improve survival and robustness, with customers in the Netherlands experiencing a 3.5% improvement in piglet survival in two years.
“Increasing production costs and lowering margins make efficiency more important,” according to Stefan Derks, DanBred’s regional director Europe.
“Investments in modern loose farrowing facilities and improved management systems are essential; producers will have to ensure a return on those investments. DanBred helps farmers produce more effectively by delivering robust animals with strong performance – documented to deliver in new and modern management systems.”
