Auctioneer Peter Crichton reported a large turn out of more than 100 buyers from many parts of East Anglia, the West Country and the North when more than 1,050 lots came under the hammer on behalf of Coastal Pigs Limited at Caistor St Edmund, Norwich, on September 21.

One of the largest sales of outdoor pig equipment the firm has conducted in recent years, it still took only three hours and five minutes to dispose of every lot in the auction. Firm prices were achieved from start to finish, especially for equipment that had been well maintained by the vendor.

The sale opened with 150 lots of miscellaneous equipment including 300-gallon juice tanks selling to £80 each, galvanised gates to £80 each, a loading race to £720, Honda power washer £460, and many other useful items of sundry equipment readily sold.

Thirty Hudson-type 12ft x 16ft sow barns sold from £600 to £780 each to average £680; 42 Harvey renovated five-ring dry sow arcs that were at least 15-years old still sold well for between £145 and £180 to average £161; and 12 more recent manufacture four-ring Harvey dry sow arcs sold for between £440 and £480 to average £450.

A selection of 50 Booth galvanised insulated farrowing kennels that were approximately 10-years old met plenty of enquiry selling between £270 and £320 to average £291. Harvey half-round insulated farrowing arcs also sold readily between £280 and £315 to average £293.

A selection of more than 80 Harvey uninsulated farrowing arcs, some of which were in worn condition, saw buyers prepared to spend between £70 and £130 to average £102, and 10 Andrew Baker farrowing arcs with incorporated fenders were knocked down at between £140 and £180 to average £156.

A large selection of more than 160 fenders in mainly used condition found new homes for between £20 and £38 to average £32.50, and 4ft farrowing paddock vulcanised rubber double-ended drinking troughs sold within a tight range between £32 and £38 to average £34.50. Other troughs included 90 galvanised 20ft outdoor sow feed troughs selling between £80 and £100 each to average £92.50, and wallows sold to £95 each.

A useful selection of Harvey tents saw 30ft x 16ft finisher units sell for up to £2,700 including hurdles, and up to £1,850 without. Groups of 10 hurdles to fit the tents sold for between £650 and £820 per set.  A dozen Harvey 16ft x 21ft rearer tents also met plenty of demand and sold for between £1,420 and £1,550 each without hurdles. Groups of eight hurdles to fit these tents sold for between £600 and £760 per set.

A useful selection of bulk bins sold readily with 2012 Anderson 12t side-discharge bins selling at £4,300 and £4,000; Anderson 8t side-discharge bins at £2,800; and Rowlands 12t side-discharge bulk bins at £1,000. Older bins made between £320 and £700.

Machinery and equipment sold included a 1,500-gallon slurry tanker at £1,800 and a Peter Allen 1t Rotafeeder at £1,450. A Richard Western DF8 feed trailer fetched £6,500, while a 1990 Manitou MT728-4 telehandler realised £3,800.
