The NPA has published a survey for producers in order to gain a better understanding of the current situation in the pig sector.
A wave of cuts made by the major processors in recent months has left many independent producers in a very difficult situation.
The NPA survey seeks to understand the nature of contracts and how many producers have been given notice, as well as the number of pigs that will be without a market when notice periods run out.
It should only take 5 minutes to complete and you can either complete it anonymously or provide your business name. Either way, all responses will be treated entirely confidentially.
“We appreciate any responses as it will help provide a clear picture of what is happening on the ground, as well as aiding in our conversations with the supply chain and government,” the NPA said.
At its latest Pig Industry Group meeting, the group of producers and allied industry representatives discussed the impact of the processor cuts and possible solutions for both short and long term.
With potentially as many as 10,000 pigs per week with nowhere to go in the autumn, one producer member described the situation as ‘a nightmare’.
“This is as bad a situation as I’ve never known. Producers are so upset and traumatised because they basically don’t know if they can sell their pigs in three or four months’ time – and that has never, ever been the case before,” he said.
ASCA survey
The Agricultural Supply Chain Adjudicator (ASCA) is launching a new survey to better understand the current challenges the pig sector faces and awareness of the Fair Dealing Obligations.
The survey – which can be completed here – invites producers, processors and others working across the industry to share their experiences and reflections.
