Ceva has announced the launch of an injectable product developed to prevent iron deficiency and treat and prevent coccidiosis in neonatal piglets.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has given marketing authorisation for Forceris, the first approved injectable combination of gleptoferron and toltrazuril in Europe.
The product is approved for the prevention of iron deficiency anaemia, treatment of coccidiosis (diarrhoea), as well as helping to prevent the occurrence of coccidiosis, by reducing oocyst excretion on farms with a confirmed history of the disease caused by Cystoisospora suis.
It is a fixed dose combination product and will be available in two different presentations of 100ml and 250 ml. The easy-to-use combination product can be used in lactating piglets from the first day of life.
Coccidiosis is a common cause of piglet diarrhoea, causing scouring and severe discomfort in neo-natal piglets, which if left untreated can be fatal. Infection can occur in all types of farrowing facilities and under all types of management systems.
Iron deficiency anaemia in piglets is well known and treatment with iron supplementation is common practice in modern pig rearing systems. Piglets are born with very little reserve of iron and with colostrum and milk from the sow usually providing only 15% or less of their daily requirement for the optimal growth and development, further supplementation is essential.
