Levels of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) in US herds is “minimal” so far this winter according to comments made by the president of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) whose headquarters are in Washington D.C.
NPPC president, Howard Hill, gave a radio interview this week in which he said the PEDv epidemic was having only a “mild” impact on the US industry at present, although he did add that the virus had been found in some finisher pigs.
He commented that the industry’s overall control progress was due to the work done by producers in relation to increasing biosecurity both on and off the farm.
Despite his relatively upbeat report, however, he urged producers to remain vigilent, with the current challenge on finishing units needing to be addressed by diligence in washing, disinfecting and drying transport vehicles.
NPPC represents 43 affiliated state associations with a “mission statement” of enhancing opportunities for the success of pork producers and other industry stakeholders by establishing the US pork industry as a consistent and responsible supplier of high-quality pork to both domestic and world markets.
