UK and Finland join forces to address tail-biting challenge

Pig producers in the UK and Finland are being asked to share experiences in a new move to help tackle the problem of tail-biting.

AHDB Pork, RSPCA Assured and the University of Helsinki have joined forces to produce and distribute a questionnaire aimed at tackling tail-biting, with producers in both countries being urged to take part.

“The questionnaire is going to producers in both the UK and in Finland where tail docking is banned to give us some valid comparisons and we are seeking the help of pig producers in the UK to provide some data,” said AHDB Pork health and welfare projects manager, Katja Stoddart.

“All results and findings will be reported anonymously to provide better information to producers on tail management and tail-related issues.”

The information which is gathered will be shared with the UK’s Pig Health and Welfare Council with the findings also being compared and exchanged with those reported by Finnish producers.

The questionnaire, which has already been sent out to a number of producers, is also available online at the following link
