Red Tractor has reminded pig producers that the strongest defence against potential exposés is ensuring pigs are consistently well cared for.
The assurance scheme, which is often a focal point of on-farm exposés, has updated members in response to signs of an increased risk of coordinated action by activist groups targeting UK pig farms.
“While CCTV, whistleblowing and monitoring can help spot problems, the most effective protection is preventing poor practices from occurring in the first place,” Red Tractor said.
“Real protection comes from a culture of continuous care, where clear standards are understood by everyone on the farm, training is ongoing, supervision is active and any lapses are addressed immediately.”
It pointed out that exposés can harm individual businesses, undermine confidence in British pig farming, increase pressure from retailers and open the door to overseas competition. “In response, food buyers increasingly expect demonstrable, independent assurance. Red Tractor remains a key part of providing that assurance, but only if its standards are consistently upheld.”
The assurance scheme set out its response when footage or allegations are received. It works with independent certification bodies to:
- Establish the facts as quickly as possible – including sometimes conducting spot checks.
- Act consistently, fairly and proportionately – including suspending farms if there is an indication of a serious breach of standards, establishing the ongoing risk to farm animals and identifying necessary corrective action.
- Communicate clearly – including explaining the steps taken to uphold standards, defending members against inaccurate or unfair claims and working with other industry organisations to maintain trust in UK production.
“Red Tractor membership is only revoked in the most serious cases where members are not able or willing to work with us to address major non-compliance with our standards,” it added.
