Leeds University’s enhanced pig research focus has already attracted a number of key staff to join the unit, including high profile recruit Professor Lisa Collins, a specialist epidemiologist who has developed computer models to predict animal behaviour.
Currently at the University of Lincoln, Prof. Collins will join the Leeds pig research team in January 2017, a move welcomed by Leeds University farm director, Professor Helen Miller.
“Our new facilities and staff, plus our existing expertise, will put us in a unique position in the UK, and will rival European leaders in this field,” said Prof. Miller.
Prof. Collins (pictured above) is currently working on the development of a new pig health and welfare monitoring system as part of a £2 million research project which was announced by the University of Lincoln in August this year.
The project (called PIGSustain) is linked to the UK-based Global Food Security (GFS) programme, which is designed to examine the resilience of food systems by combining all existing data with new scientific studies to accurately build an overview of the entire industry.
