Farm assurance debate: An important change driven by the supply chain

Confirmation by Red Tractor that it is introducing new assurance modules covering outdoor pig production put it into direct competition with RSPCA Assured for the first time. Here, Red Tractor Pig Sector Board chair Stewart Houston  makes the case for the Red Tractor scheme.

I know first-hand the challenges pig farmers face every day, and I am proud to oversee Red Tractor’s pig’s standards, which I believe work for everyone in the pig sector.

From the very start, the standards developed by Red Tractor were driven by the needs of the whole supply chain.

Red Tractor’s strength lies in this practical, industry-led approach. Every new standard or module is first developed by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), which includes experienced representatives from across the pig sector.

These members bring considerable knowledge of farm management, welfare and production practices, ensuring that every proposition is realistic and grounded in sector expertise. Once the proposition is refined, it is reviewed and approved by the Pigs Board, also fully representative of the supply chain.

This two-stage process ensures proposals are relevant, practical and robust before being shared more widely, giving members confidence that new standards have been thoroughly vetted by experts who understand the realities of pig production.

Consultation is at the heart of what we do. We listen carefully to feedback, respond honestly, and make adjustments where needed. When a decision is made, we explain the reasoning clearly, keeping our members fully informed at every stage.

Alongside industry consultation, we carry out extensive consumer research to test our direction of travel. This ensures that our standards meet sector expectations while also resonating with public concerns around welfare, food safety and sustainability.

By combining sector expertise with consumer insight, Red Tractor creates standards that are practical, trusted and forward-looking.

Outdoor-focused module

A prime example of this approach is the current outdoor-focused module under development. It was created in direct response to industry requests to help tackle one of the Farm Assurance Review’s key challenges: multiple audits.

Farmers have repeatedly highlighted the time and cost involved in navigating overlapping schemes, and this module streamlines checks, reduces duplication and simplifies compliance.

By easing the audit burden, the module delivers tangible time and cost savings for farmers, processors and the wider supply chain. In addition, it provides opportunities for farmers to demonstrate higher welfare standards, with clear pathways to showcase best practice and differentiate their products in the marketplace.

Red Tractor also delivers practical commercial benefits. The scheme enjoys widespread recognition among retailers and consumers, and is the only scheme to offer full traceability from farms to fork.

This provides farmers with a strong platform to demonstrate the quality, safety and welfare standards of their pigs.

Partnerships with all major retailers help ensure that Red Tractor-assured pork is valued and preferred throughout the supply chain, translating assurance into real commercial advantage for farmers.

All systems

Crucially, Red Tractor works across all production systems. Whether farms are indoor, outdoor, or a combination of both, the scheme is designed to be inclusive and adaptable, allowing all pig farmers to participate and benefit.

This flexibility, combined with a robust consultation process, clear communication of decisions and strong market recognition, ensures that Red Tractor supports farms of every type and scale.

In short, Red Tractor delivers for farmers because it balances sector needs with consumer expectations.

Developed by the industry for the industry, through a transparent process combining sector expertise, consultation and consumer insight, it simplifies compliance, reduces audit burden, enhances commercial value and supports higher welfare standards.

For 25 years, Red Tractor has been shaped by the needs of farmers, processors, retailers and consumers, evolving with the pig sector at every step. Today, it’s a practical, credible and future-ready assurance scheme that delivers real value and confidence for everyone involved.

Red Tractor’s plans for outdoor modules

Based on the responses to an industry-wide consultation, the Red Tractor Pigs Board agreed to:

  • Move forward with creating new outdoor modules and logos, with the aim of making them available by the end of the year. The new modules will cover outdoor-bred pigs with straw-based or free-range finishing. The standards will largely mirror RSPCA Assured’s outdoor standards.
  • Pause work to develop an indoor-focused ‘Certified Standards Plus’ module, based largely around flexible farrowing. But it will continue to explore ways to support producers transitioning to alternative systems.
  • Upgrade its core standards to ensure they align with other schemes and reduce farms’ audit burden.
