Pig farmers who also keep poultry on the same unit or nearby have been warned by NPA that they could be affected if avian flu is identified in the UK.
The warning comes on the back of the introduction this week of prevention zones in England, Wales and Scotland, which required poultry farmers to keep their bird indoors.
“Pig units will be restricted if there is an AI outbreak near a unit, so we would advise producers to remove hens from around a sow unit,” said NPA chief executive, Zoe Davies (pictured above).
“Indoor producers that may have pig and poultry sheds on the same site need to be aware and put a contingency plan in place in case they are movement restricted.
“This was an issue for some farmers last time we had AI in the country.”
