The well-known Huntsham herd of pedigree Middle White pigs, the UK’s only major supplier of the much sought-after pork from the breed, is up for sale.
Richard Vaughan and his wife, Rosamund, have built up a business supplying Middle White pork, Longhorn beef and Ryeland lamb at Huntsham Court Farm in the Wye Valley over nearly three decades.
The business supplies about a third of the Michelin starred restaurants in the country, alongside numerous private customers, with sales of about £20,000 to £25,000 a week and a turnover of around £1m a year across the three species.
They are closing the business at the end of October. The preference is to sell the whole business, representing an opportunity to pick up a ‘ready-made position in a profitable niche market’.
However, part sales of stock will be considered. The Huntsham Middle White herd comprises about 80 sows, 10 boars and associated piglets, weaners and finishers. The breeding stock includes all Middle White sow and boar lines and the farm is the only major supplier of Middle White pork, which is much sought after by top chefs in the UK.
The farm has been in the Vaughan family for nearly 400 years and today specialises in producing meat of the highest quality from these traditional breeds.
“These magnificent animals are given individual attention by a small devoted team and are reared and fattened slowly to produce meat of superlative quality, taste and texture,” the farm’s website explains.
“The meat is then hung in the traditional way until it reaches perfect maturity and prepared by our skilled butcher to meet the requirements of individual customers.”
