A top US chef has been showcasing British pork and lamb at a show in Los Angeles to help boost the Stateside appetite for quality British red meat, particularly as California seeks high welfare meat products.
Betty Fraser, co-owner of the award-winning, Hollywood restaurant Grub, and the successful As You Like It Catering, joined AHDB at the California Restaurant Show.
The show – which highlights latest menu trends and attracts key contacts from the US restaurant, food service and hospitality sector – provided the platform for Betty to impress visitors with British pork and lamb dishes.
Susana Morris, AHDB senior trade development manager, said: “The California Restaurant Show was a fantastic opportunity for us to champion our produce in this important market. We were delighted that Betty Fraser was able to join us to help illustrate to the US food service sector the taste and versatility of quality British pork and lamb.”
AHDB’s presence at the show followed a trade mission with exporters earlier this year to California further to the state’s Proposition 12 legislation coming into force, establishing stricter production standards including the provision of greater freedom of movement for pigs.
The mission included meetings with several quality meat distributors, wholesalers and visits to major supermarkets and an opportunity to shine a spotlight on British pig meat produced to the highest standards.
Ms Morris added: “Appearing at the California Restaurant Show was an ideal follow up to our successful mission in January, acting as a platform for us to further build on the reputation of our quality red meat.
“We have identified opportunities for pork and lamb in the US market and our latest activity is a further demonstration of our commitment to work with industry to help deliver positive outcomes for our red meat sectors.”
