National Pig Awards – recognising the huge contribution made by pig vets

An award recognising the vital contribution to pig health and welfare made by the nation’s vets has been opened up to individuals of all ages.

Previously, the National Pig Awards, run by Pig World magazine, have included an award exclusively for ‘Young Vets’ to help inspire young people in this important sector.

But while that has been successful, with some fantastic young winners named over the years, the organisers have taken the decision to open the award up more widely to improve engagement and ensure all those who deliver this essential service have the chance to be duly honoured.

Individual vets can either enter themselves or be nominated. If needed, the awards team will assist with the entries.

Judges will be looking for examples of proactive herd health management, evidence of addressing on-farm disease challenges and a strong focus on pig welfare.

  • Nominations for the Farm Vet of the Year, sponsored by Zoetis, and the other categories are open until Friday, June 27.

The winners will be unveiled, alongside 13 other National Pig Awards, at the pig industry’s big night of the year at a gala ceremony in London in November.

The Pig Veterinary Society is part of the awards judging panel and its president Dan Tucker said: “There are so many great individuals out there working across the pig sector performing often unrecognised work that delivers great benefits to their clients and, most importantly, the pigs under their care.

“Opening it up means many more of these people are now eligible to enter – so, if you think you deserve that recognition or know we someone who does, we urge you to enter or nominate!”

Zoetis national veterinary manager Laura Hancox said: “We are delighted to, once again, sponsor this award to honour the vital work vets do, but also to inspire others and encourage good practice.

“So, if you think a vet – yourself or someone else – has done something exceptional that sets them apart, please give it a go.”
