This week’s Slaughter Pig Marketing Summary, from Thames Valley Cambac, reported that the marketing week was very similar from a supply and demand point of view.
Some of the majors continued to cut kills, but others were back to normal. Supply was steady, and average weights eased slightly. All contract contributions stood on, and contract prices were little changed. The fresh meat market came under a bit of pressure, however, seeing generally poor demand, and prices eased a penny with some outlets.
Some households have not seen a pay packet since before Christmas, and high street footfall shows that fact starkly. The cull sow market struggled again, with currency changes taking quotes a penny less. European markets were stable, with the exception of France, which fell by 7 eurocents on a combination of poorer trade, and a correction in reaction to prices of its near neighbours.
Price quotes in sterling were further compromised by a weaker Euro which ended the week down 0.79p at 84.31p.
The Weaner Marketing Summary, for week commencing January 19, reported that supplies remained on the tight side, but there was little trade outside contract movements. The prices announced by the AHDB saw no quote given for a 30kg store pig, and the weighted average for a 7kg weaner rise by £1.23 to £42.49.
