Realistic and achievable air quality targets need to be agreed for the livestock sector as part of the current EU Air Quality Review says Copa-Cogeca.
Warning that review proposals relating to emission reduction targets for methane and ammonia will hit livestock producers hard, Copa-Cogeca wants the review body to think again.
“EU agriculture is ready to contribute to combating climate change but some emission targets, included in the National Emission Ceilings Directive, are unacceptable,” said Copa-Cogeca secretary-general, Pekka Pesonen.
The farm and farm coop body has therefore called on the European Commission to come up with new ammonia proposals, by the end of 2016, which will create a “level playing field” for the industry, which is science based and cost-effective.
The air quality issue is due to come before the European Parliament at the end of October.
