“A Technological & Sustainable Approach to Meat Inspection”

The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (AIMS) published a report today. The report “A Technological & Sustainable Approach to Meat Inspection”, sets out how many of the challenges facing the small abattoir and poultry processing sectors can be addressed through the use remote inspection.

The report’s author, Dr Jason Aldiss, said “The abattoir and poultry processing sectors are facing unprecedented financial challenges which are threatening their very existence. The loss of smaller abattoirs and poultry processing businesses across the UK means that food miles have increased considerably over the years negatively impacting on animal welfare and the environment”.

Head of Policy at AIMS, Norman Bagley added “Currently all abattoirs and poultry processing sites are treated with a one size fits all inspection regime. There are many examples of small business in the sector being charged £000’s for elements of inspection that are resource heavy and not-risk based furthermore, most of this cost is picked up by the tax-payer.”

“AIMS firmly believes that a more pragmatic approach using technology as the tool to modernise the meat and poultry inspection process is now needed in order for these vital local businesses to remain viable with their local rural economies” said Jason.
