United Pig Co-operative (UPC) is the UK’s largest pig marketing co-operative with an annual turnover of £500m formed from the merger of Thames Valley Cambac Ltd, Scotlean Pigs, and Scottish Pig Producers. The team of 14 have the mission to deliver value for our independent farmer members, being the supplier of choice to our processor customers while ensuring a secure and sustainable future for independent pig production in the UK.
Due to retirement, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced person to take on the role of Managing Director to lead our business and drive future growth. This is a unique opportunity for a strategic leader with a passion for the pig sector to shape the future of a major UK producer co-operative.
The Role:
Reporting to the Chairman and Board, the Managing Director will:
- Develop and implement business strategy in collaboration with the Board.
- Lead negotiations on volume, specifications, and pricing formulas with processors and producers.
- Drive value creation for both processors and producer members.
- Oversee compliance across the supply chain.
- Manage a team across two locations, ensuring effective contract supply management, scheduling and administration.
- Control debtor management and oversee the credit insurance policy.
- Maintain strong relationships across the pig sector, including processors, producers, and industry stakeholders.
- Oversee financial and operational aspects, including banking relationships and IT solutions.
- Manage HR functions, focusing on team development and performance.
- Ensure cost control in areas such as hospitality, sponsorship, and producer meetings.

- Strong negotiation, sales, and persuasion skills to secure the best arrangements for stakeholders.
- Attention to detail and the ability to manage financial and contractual obligations effectively.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent customer relationship and management skills.
- Good IT skills and the ability to oversee the bespoke business trading and administration system.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present formally.
- People management experience, with the ability to lead, develop and motivate a team.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a hands-on approach to business challenges.
- Knowledge of pig production and a good understanding of cost of production’s (COPs).
- Some understanding of pig processing operations.
