In what will be a huge relief for the pig sector, the Government has reached an agreement with the owner of CF Fertiliser to resume CO2 production at two plants in the north of England that shut down due to soaring gas prices.
The two plants produced 60% of the UK’s CO2 and the shut down prompted concerns that processors would be unable to slaughter pigs, in some cases by the end of this week.
Sky News has reported that the government has reached agreement with CF to restart CO2 production at its UK sites, following talks between the company and business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng, who said this morning that he was confident a deal would be reached ‘very soon’.
Details of the deal between the government and CF Industries are expected to be revealed later.
