The pig sector must not be left behind the result of the world as a result of delays in the Brexit process, NPA vice chairman Rob Mutimer has told Parliamentarians.
The NPA was well represented at a House of Commons breakfast, hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Eggs, Pigs and Poultry. The group, chaired by Democratic Unionist Party MP Jim Shannon and including MPs from across the politicial spectrum, raises issues of concern for the industry in Parliament.
Speaking at the event, Mr Mutimer highlighted some of the opportunities the NPA believes Brexit brings for the sector and also raised some of its concerns, including the impact on investment of the time it is taking to negotiate a Brexit deal.
“I don’t want to be the generation that gets left behind versus the rest of the world as everyone continues to invest and improve while UK farmers wait for Brexit to become clear,” he said.
Mr Shannon also spoke, highlighting the group’s support for the pig and poultry sectors and promising to continue raising important issues with the Government.
NPA policy services officer Lizzie Wilson said the APPG played an important role in getting key industry messages heard in Parliament, while events like this enabled the association to explain its concerns face-to-face with decision-makers.
Senior policy advisor Ed Barker added: “This was a welcome opportunity to outline a positive vision for the future of the sector in improving health, welfare and productivity, whilst also raising our concerns about raising welfare standards beyond our competitors, and the absence of ‘food’ in the Command paper.”
