BPEX confirms the end of the DAPP

The BPEX board has confirmed that the final Deadweight Average Pig Price (DAPP) will be published on Wednesday, October 1, for the week ending Saturday, September 27, 2014.

This follows the introduction of two new pig price series reported by BPEX, the Average Pig Price (APP), which began in April 2014 and the Standard Pig Price (SPP), first published in July.

At the time, the BPEX board agreed the DAPP would continue to be published for a period of six months to allow the industry time to understand the new prices.

SPP data going back to April 2014 has now also been published on the BPEX website in the Prices, Facts and Figures section. The SPP is a voluntary survey of pig abattoirs’ price data but, unlike the DAPP, only standard pigs are included.

Standard pigs are those that don’t attract an explicit premium for a specific attributes such as breed, feeding regime or a production system such as Freedom Food. The APP covers both standard and premium pigs, but data is collected from sellers rather than buyers.

AHDB’s head of data and analysis, Charlotte Garbutt, said the SPP and the APP provided two valuable pig price data series that were important to keep the industry fully informed about historical pig market price trends.

“Now the APP and SPP are established, we’re in a transition period in which the DAPP will continue to be published alongside them until the end of September,” she added.
