Tulip prepares to halve production at Wirral plant

The pigmeat processor Tulip has begun a period of collective consultation with employees over plans to halve production levels at its site in Bromborough, on the Wirral.

The move follows an announcement in October last year that Tulip, a subsidiary of Danish Crown, had been “unsuccessful” in its bid to retain and grow some of its business at the Bromborough site following a supplier review with one of its customers.

The company’s current agreement with the customer concerned comes to an end in May, after which Tulip is expecting to “see a phased reduction in production which equates to almost half of total production” at Bromborough, a site which is used for the production of fresh sausages for retail and food service customers in the UK

While Tulip said it aimed to keep potential job losses to a minimum, the company also warned that up to 121 people face a risk of redundancy.
